Karunyam Palliative Care, Maniyur: Eighteen Years of Compassionate Care for the Chronically Ill and Marginalized

Founded in April 2007, Karunyam Palliative Care has served as a consistent source of support and relief for the past 18 years. During this period, the organization has provided care and assistance to more than 2,500 patients and their families who are facing some of life’s most difficult circumstances.

Karunyam Pain and Palliative Care, Maniyur is a community-based charitable organization located in Maniyur Panchayath, Kozhikode District, Kerala. The organization focuses on delivering long-term care and support to individuals suffering from chronic illness, disability, and extreme poverty. Its primary mission is to provide medical, emotional, and social support to patients who are beyond curative treatment and often marginalized by society.

Karunyam was founded with the objective of restoring hope, comfort, and dignity to those battling chronic illness and poverty. Chronic disease can disrupt an entire family’s life, leaving both patients and caregivers physically, emotionally, and financially strained. For many, pain relief, emotional reassurance, and basic medical care remain out of reach. Karunyam exists to ensure that no individual has to face such suffering alone.

We know the power of sharing is real, and we want to create an opportunity for everyone to try Preline and explore how transformative open communication can be. Now you can have a team of one or two designers and unlimited spectators (think PMs, management, marketing, etc.) share work and explore the design process earlier.

Countless destitute individuals struggle daily to secure food, medicines, and essential healthcare. Their distress often goes unnoticed, and their needs unmet. Karunyam Palliative Care, Maniyur, was established to respond to these silent struggles by providing compassionate, community-driven support to those most in need.

The organization serves patients with a wide range of conditions, including cancer, kidney disease, spinal cord injuries, arthritis, mental illness, and age-related disorders. The journey through chronic illness is frequently overwhelming, particularly for those without financial means or family support. Karunyam addresses these challenges by emphasizing compassion, continuity of care, and community involvement to improve quality of life.

A key priority of Karunyam is to provide essential emergency medical assistance and consistent follow-up care to patients who have the potential for recovery. For patients who are discharged from hospitals with no further curative options, Karunyam offers comprehensive end-of-life care. This includes effective pain management—using medications such as morphine where medically indicated—along with emotional and psychosocial support, ensuring comfort, dignity, and peace during the final stages of life.

Through its sustained commitment to care, comfort, and community service, Karunyam Palliative Care, Maniyur, continues to stand beside those who suffer in silence, working to restore dignity and relieve pain where it is needed most.
